Neighbour Day Brings the Community Together at BLOX's Free Meals Pop-Up 2026

On June 20, BLOX was proud to celebrate Neighbour Day by hosting our annual Free Meals Pop-Up in partnership with Alpha House. The event welcomed community members from across the Beltline for a free meal, warm drinks, lawn games and a chance to connect with neighbours in a friendly welcoming space.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed free hotdogs, chips, Timbits, coffee, hot chocolate, and bottled water. While the food brought people over, the conversations and shared moments made the day especially meaningful. One of the highlights was seeing a family of four stop by to enjoy lunch together. After grabbing their meals, they spent time playing lawn games and enjoying the afternoon. Watching parents and children laugh together was a simple but memorable reminder of what Neighbour Day is all about -- bringing people together and creating opportunities to connect.

Another memorable moment came when a vulnerable community member arrived with a shopping cart and was thrilled to learn that he could take as much food as he needed. Along with enjoying a hot meal, he took several bags of chips and bottles of water for later. Knowing he would have something to eat beyond that afternoon reflected a main goal of ours to meet our community's immediate needs while treating everyone with kindness and respect. The Free Meals Pop-Up took place during Sled Week, creating a welcoming space for a wide range of community members. Throughout the afternoon, we welcomed people experiencing food insecurity, Beltline residents, office workers from nearby businesses, passing truck drivers, Sled Island Festival attendees, and festival volunteers. This mix of people reflected the diversity of the neighbourhood and highlighted how a shared meal can bring together individuals from all walks of life. Many attendees shared that they planned to take their meals to the nearby Bow River to enjoy the afternoon, while others spoke about how much they appreciated having access to a free warm meal.

As the event was coming to a close, a couple arrived with their dog just as everything was winding down. There was still enough food to prepare meals for both of them, and even their dog received a hotdog to enjoy. They left smiling, ending the day on a heartwarming note. In total, 300 hotdogs were prepared for the initiative. After serving community members throughout the afternoon, all remaining food, snacks, and beverages were provided to Alpha House to ensure nothing went to waste and that the support continued beyond the event.

Neighbour Day is an opportunity to celebrate what makes Calgary's communities strong: looking out for one another, sharing what we have, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcomed. Events like Free Meals Pop-Up remind us that something as simple s sharing a meal can spark conversations, build connections, and brighten someone's day. BLOX is grateful to Alpha House and everyone who stopped by to make this year's event such a success.
