BLOX BIA Expansion Update: Refocusing Within the Beltline

We're entering a new chapter at BLOX, and with it comes a few important updates to our proposed BIA expansion. After some thoughtful re-evaluation, we've updated our boundaries to focus solely on the Beltline. This means we'll no longer be extending into Sunalta -- at least for now. While we were genuinely excited about the possibility of bringing our programming and support to Sunalta, we've made the decision to refine our efforts and concentrate fully on areas within the Beltline. This allows us to stay aligned with the community we know best and keep building momentum where we're already seeing strong connections, interest and impact. So what's changed? The proposed expansion focuses on adding new areas in the Beltline that weren't part of the original BLOX BIA. You can see it mapped out below:

The red zone marks our current BIA boundaries, covering much of the west side of the Beltline. The peach zone shows the updated proposed expansion area, which extends further east and south -- stretching between 10 Ave and 14 Ave SW, from 14 St to 1 St SE. This expansions will allow us to continue growing the work we've already started: strengthening the creative economy, supporting small businesses, and championing the culture of Calgary's inner city. What about Sunalta?

We’ve removed Sunalta from the proposed expansion for the time being, but that decision isn’t final or permanent. We plan to re-evaluate this in the future and remain open to new possibilities. In the process of exploring this expansion, we’ve built meaningful connections with many individuals, businesses, and community groups in Sunalta — relationships we deeply value and intend to maintain. Where it makes sense, we’ll continue collaborating and supporting their work. It’s also important to us that Sunalta’s unique identity is preserved. With over 115 years of history, Sunalta has its own strong sense of place, vision, and priorities. Any future collaboration — whether that means joining BLOX or creating a new BIA tailored specifically to Sunalta — would be approached with care and in alignment with what the community wants for itself. Our goal is to support, not overshadow, the distinct character that makes Sunalta what it is. Why it matters The Beltline is full of energy, diversity, and potential. By expanding deeper into the heart of the neighbourhood, we're laying the groundwork for even more support for local events, placemaking, safety programmes, business development, and public art. We want to make it easier for new ideas to take root and for businesses and creatives to thrive. We’re excited about this next phase — and we’re grateful to everyone who’s helped shape the path so far.
